Sofia Airport Q1 Passenger Traffic Sets New Records

Passenger traffic at Bulgaria’s main airport in the capital of Sofia rose 13% year-on-year to 980,882 travelers in the first quarter, official data showed on Monday.

The number of passengers on international routes, who account for 93% of the total traffic, increased 15% on the year in January-March, while domestic passenger traffic shrank 2%, Sofia Airport said in a statement.

Aircraft movements during the period rose 9.4% to 10,756. Out of them, international regular lines increased the most – by 12%.

The airport handled 4,937 tonnes of cargo and postal shipments in January-March, up 20% compared to the same period last year.

In March alone, passenger traffic rose by an annual 11%, while cargo and postal shipments jumped 34%.

Last year, the airport serviced a record high number of more than four million passengers. It is expected to reach a new all-time high this year, driven chiefly by the planned entry of Irish low-cost airline Ryanair, as well as by the addition of new routes by its Hungarian rival Wizz Air.
